Engine & Fuel FAQ
What is the average life of a timing belt?
The typical timing belt lasts 60,000 to 100,000 miles (about 5–7 years), depending on the engine design and driving environment. Always follow the interval listed in your owner’s manual; a worn belt can snap without warning and cause severe engine damage on interference-type engines.
How do you fix a knocking engine?
Engine knock (also called detonation or rod knock) is repaired by identifying the source—spark-timing errors, low-octane fuel, carbon buildup, or worn bearings—and then correcting it. Solutions range from an ECU re-flash and higher-octane fuel to removing the oil pan and replacing damaged rod bearings or even rebuilding the engine short block.
What is abnormal engine noise?
Any sound outside the engine’s normal hum—knocks, pings, rattles, squeals, hisses, or grinding—counts as abnormal. Each noise points to a different subsystem (e.g., timing chain rattle vs. belt squeal). Document when the noise occurs (cold start, acceleration, idle) to speed diagnosis.
How to identify engine noises?
Start by isolating the conditions: idle vs. load, hot vs. cold. Use a mechanic’s stethoscope or a rubber hose to localize the sound. Compare frequency with engine RPM—noises that double with RPM often indicate rotating parts like bearings, while rhythmic ticks may be valvetrain-related. Professional diagnostics include oil-pressure tests and bore-scope inspections to confirm the cause.
Why is my engine rattling when I accelerate?
Acceleration rattles are commonly caused by spark knock (pre-ignition), loose heat shields, worn timing chains, or low-octane fuel under load. Continuing to drive can lead to piston damage, so schedule a compression test and fuel-quality check if the rattle persists.
How often should I replace my timing belt?
Most manufacturers recommend timing belt replacement every 60k–100k miles. We verify the exact interval for your VIN using OEM databases and factor local Texas heat—which accelerates rubber degradation—into our advice.
Can I run biodiesel in my truck?
B20 blends are fine for most late-model diesels, but always use quality fuel and change filters every 15k miles. FASS filtration adds extra protection.
